Hi, my name is Barry and I’m a physiotherapist. I graduated from UCD with honours BSc 2015 and prior to that I studied Sports physiology and health science in Carlow IT, and before that I was a qualified electrician working for various Cork and international companies.
I’m a father of 4 (3boys and 1 girl) and my big dog Pango. I would describe myself as not the normal physio as I’m 6’7’’ (2.0m) tall carrying a fair bit of weight and I’m always in shorts unless I’m on my motorbike where I have to wear pants.I’m an avid sports fan of all sports and play a lot of them. Like (deep breath) hurling, football, rugby, full and 7s American football, hockey, lacrosse, softball, intervarsity soccer, archery, darts & golf (poorly).
Since graduating college I’ve worked in care of the elderly, HSE who I left to join the team at Optimum Recovery. Over this time I have learnt so much, but one thing has remained: I love helping and treating people. The Irish ‘CHAT’ is so important. To understand the person, I’m talking about where they have come from and how life has brought them to this place in time to come and allowing me to help them is an honour and something I never take lightly.
I have a level 1 NKT (neuro kinetic therapy). I completed a hand rehab course and shoulder stability course. I am currently completing an acupuncture course which has opened my eyes to a different way to look at injuries, to question things that I would have taken a gospel previously. Menstrual pain (apologies to every woman/lady reading this, another fecking MAN talking about periods, but mother nature never wanted you to have ANY pain- sounds interesting), shoulder injuries, OA /RA of the knee to name just a few.
Outside of work my hobbies are kids kids kids kids kids kids kids kids to name a few.
Honestly I love woodwork and building/ making things watching, going to watch rugby or perform pitch side physio. I love to cook, be it inside or on the BBQ, anything that gets the taste buds salivating.
